Religious Education (RE)

RE Lead - Miss R O'Dwyer

At Lowerplace our RE curriculum aims to provoke challenging questions about the meaning and purpose in life, beliefs about God, issues of right and wrong and what it means to be human. We learn about and from religions and worldwide views in local, national and global contexts to discover, explore and consider the different answers to these questions. Pupils learn to weigh up the value of wisdom from different resources, to develop and express their insights and to agree or disagree respectfully. We aim to equip pupils with systematic knowledge and understanding of a range of religions and worldviews, enabling them to develop their own ideas, values and identities. This should develop in pupils an aptitude for dialogue so they can participate in our society with its diverse religions and worldwide views. They should learn to articulate clearly and coherently their personal beliefs, ideas, values and experience while respecting the right of other to differ.

At Lowerplace, RE lessons are taught following the Rochdale Agreed Syllabus for Religious Education 2019-2024 scheme of work where we aim to deliver a curriculum that is accessible to all and will maximize the best outcomes for all children. It provides a high-quality educational experience for all pupils whilst providing a cohesive whole school approach that allows for building on skills and progression.

The curriculum incorporates three distinct strands;

Believing; Religious beliefs, teaching, sources; questions about meaning, purpose and truth

Expressing; Religious and spiritual forms of expression; questions about identity and diversity

Living; Religious practices and ways of living; questions about values and commitments

The curriculum for RE aims to ensure that all pupils:

1. Know about and understand a range of religions and worldviews

2. Express ideas and insights about the nature, significance and impact of religions and worldviews

3. Gain and deploy the skills needed to engage seriously with religions and worldviews.

RE at Lowerplace aims to help our children better understand the world they live in and the people we live alongside.
